Love

Posted on Nov 21st, 2008 by Shuruq : Supporter of Going with the Flow Shuruq
I'm amazed...simply amazed.

I have the most precious gift to be had.  Love of oneself...although I'm still working on some of those smaller things that pass through unconsciously, I've been increasingly aware:  I love me...and this is such a boon in this life.  I have this wonderful partner and my hopes and dreams are ever-growing...and such the right way...I'm following my heart and truth.  What a combination, I gotta say...

I'm anxious about Peace Corps...more anxious about meeting my debt-free goal next year... This winter will be more scholarship essays ... this summer yeilded not a thing...and that's alright! Going with the flow..and going with love...I feel such a strength in me...

Home, Homes...

It's funny to be back in Williamsburg and realizing that it could be the last time for a very long time...Hopes of the peace corps and meeting new people, seeing old folk...it's a flurry of emotions, a time to reflect...a time to meditate on what's new in me, or rather what's changing...the changes are daily.  I hope that I'm able to just be true to myself and to be/do/see truth...because that's all the matters.

Scholarship Hope

Posted on Jul 17th, 2008 by Shuruq : Supporter of Going with the Flow Shuruq
Well...applied for the scholarship! I'm hoping for so much! (I plan to sell my car next year to help pay the debt...)  Nothing to do but wait and listen...these are good things: waiting and listening....  what I wrote about?  Read on!

My purpose:

I feel it’s to make stronger existing connections through compassion and shared knowledge…and ameliorate human-to-human links by showing how differences, in actuality, may exact similarities.

What I love:

I love the Deaf!  And I love Africa!  Ultimately, the combination of these two cultures would put me in a euphoric state.  I’ve applied for a post in Kenya to work with communities on deaf sensitivity to help bridge the gap between communities of hearing and deaf.  However, I can’t jump ahead of myself (and wouldn’t want to!) so  paying for and finishing my studies at William and Mary comes first.  I enjoy signing…a lot.  I’m hearing and my family is hearing, but seven years ago I was introduced to American Sign Language and Deaf culture.  It’s a shame that the two cultures, deaf and hearing, don’t share more knowledge.  Our planet lives better if we work together.   When the human population is separated by it’s differences, taking any action on a small local scale is inevitably difficult.  Just because someone is deaf, does that mean that they can’t see what is going on around them?  I feel as though deaf communities are still often marginalized as lacking a keenness in mind for their inability to hear.  My heart tells me that there is amazing headway made by the Deaf and hard of hearing communities in the United States.  We have much more material and knowledge circulating about environmental concerns, but what about abroad?  In various Second, and Third World countries??  My love of nature moves me to want to share how we can make our lives more green while at the same time helping strengthen community bonds abroad.

Ideal Job:

I would spend my time creating projects to share environmental issues within Deaf communities, which may not be attributed much education to begin with.  Regardless of the amount of change, it may be one singular project; I would like to simultaneously infuse the environmental education with the message “being deaf is beautiful!”  I don’t see equivalence between ‘big’ and ‘good’ in terms of establishing or maintaining a project (that’s not to say that sometimes there isn’t).  The depth within the human to human connection is what counts; leaving a community feeling stronger, by improving bonds among members with a long-term project is what I hope to be able to accomplish after paying off my undergraduate education.  I want to learn so much more about the other people who live on this earth, and help them better their lives with any skills I can lend.  A typical day, I would treasure:  wake up to the Serengeti sun, greet a school of Deaf children, choose a topic for the week (perhaps cleaner water initiative), and bring both parts of the community (Deaf and Hearing) together on collaborative, sustainable project.  I would also like to make a documentary, (“Kenya Kollabrative” –the title is still a work in progressJ).  In essence, I’d like to share with everyone how different Deaf children around poorer parts of the globe are doing to help our Mother Earth.
